GulfQuest National Maritime Museum of the Gulf CoastHave you ever wanted to pilot a container ship? How about a U.S. Coast Guard patrol boat? You can do all these things and much more at GulfQuest National Maritime Museum!

If you visit Mobile, AL and see a gigantic boat-shaped building on the riverfront, that’s the GulfQuest National Maritime Museum of the Gulf Coast!

This unique, glass-walled, ship-shaped museum is dedicated to the rich maritime traditions of the Gulf Coast. It is one of only two interactive maritime museums in the country and a must-see for anyone visiting Mobile Bay.

The 90,000 square foot facility, which opened in 2015, houses 90, state-of-the-art, interactive, and immersive exhibits. Did I mention that the majority of them are located aboard a life-sized replica of a container ship, surrounded by water, inside the museum?

I guarantee you’ve never seen anything like the GulfQuest National Maritime Museum.

Despite the amazing spectacle of the building, the real star here is all the wonderful, interactive exhibits. Above I asked if you’d ever wanted to pilot a U.S. Coast Guard patrol boat or a container ship.

One of the most popular exhibits at GulfQuest is a Ship’s Bridge Simulator. This exhibit allows you to pilot a ship through the Gulf of Mexico, up into the Port of Mobile. Vessel choices include a container ship, a tugboat hauling barges, or a U.S. Coast Guard patrol boat. The simulator’s panoramic display make the experience startlingly realistic.

Other exhibits cover maritime history, marine archaeology, shipwrecks, marine life and weather, tanker surfing, and much more. The facility also includes a gift shop, café, and amazing views of all the activity at the Port of Mobile.

You could easily spend two full days exploring GulfQuest before you saw all the exhibits, so you’ll want to plan for at least half a day.
