Alabama’s Weeks Bay Nature Reserve, on Hwy 98 between Fairhope and Foley, is more than 6,000 acres of tidal and forested wetlands within a small estuary that you can visit for nature walks, boating, and more!
Weeks Bay Nature Reserve is important not only because it preserves an important and endangered part of our natural world from development but also for study. Part of the National Estuarine Research Reserves System’s of 28 different biogeographic regions of the United States, Weeks Bay Nature Reserve (Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve) is extremely important for long-term research, water-quality monitoring, education, and coastal stewardship.
The most immediate benefit, of course, is that Weeks Bay Nature Reserve is open to visitors and an absolutely wonderful place for those who enjoy the unspoiled, natural world!
Tidelands, forested wetlands, and marshes, and a pitcher plant bog, merge with the Fish and Magnolia Rivers to support delicate and varied habitats for a myriad of rare plant and animal species – all of which are easily viewable, thanks to the reserve’s systems of nature trails and boardwalks.
Bring your non-power boat, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard for greater immersion and recreation upon the Fish River. Here you’ll have the opportunity to see wild dolphins, pelicans, and other, native wildlife.
At the Weeks Bay Interpretive Center you’ll experience hands-on learning with the touch tank, see live, baby alligators, view collections of regional plants, gain insight into the nature of estuaries from informative exhibits, and much more.
There’s even a gift shop with lots of Weeks Bay related items – books, toys, clothing, decorative items, and more – the profits from which go towards the continuing preservation of the important natural beauty that is Weeks Bay Nature Reserve.
